Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost?
The fee is:
£275; $375 US; $475 Canadian; $510 Australian.
£500 for face to face sessions in central London.
This fee covers all 5 sessions.
I’m not in the UK. Can I do Stoan Method?
Yes! We just have to be careful about getting our time zones sorted out so we’re clear about call times.
If there’s one thing we have all learned in the past 18 months (I’m writing this July 2021) it’s that we can connect around the world through Zoom. It’s opened up so much for so many people.
How is it so much cheaper than usual life coaching?
It’s cheaper because I want to introduce something new and affordable to more people. It is no less effective - for many people may be more so.
I use versions of techniques that conventional life coaches use. A big difference is that I send you preparation work to do before the session. Most people take less than an hour to complete the pre-work. You completing the thinking in advance helps to keep the cost down.
Life coaching can be expensive because, typically, there are more sessions involved as well as the cost per session being higher. Life coaching is out of the price range of many people.
The Stoan Method approach is effective quickly. Some people who have done Stoan Method with me have gone on the work with a conventional life coach or a therapist when they have identified blocks in their lives that they need more help to move.
Most people find what they need in the 5 Stoan Method sessions. They make progress in their lives.
How long do the sessions last?
Each session lasts 45 minutes.
Can I do evening and weekend sessions?
You can. I know that because of work and family commitments it can be hard to find quiet time and space for a video call. I’ll do my best to find a time that works for you.
Can I do the sessions in less than 4 weeks?
You can. I recommend at least one a week for the sessions to keep momentum up. It’s possible, diaries permitting, to do two sessions a week.
The six month check in will be in 6 months.
Most of the images on the site are of women. Is Stoan Method exclusively for women?
Stoan Method is effective for men and women. Typically though women tend to seek out help more than men. To date my clients are 75% women, 25% men.
How do I pronounce Stoan?
You say it as you would ‘stone’.
Where does the name Stoan come from?
I found Stoan. Or maybe it found me.
I had developed the technique now known as Stoan Method but I didn’t have a name for it. So many words and names have already been taken by businesses. It’s not easy to find completely new ones.
I had in mind that I wanted a name that sounded as if it could be a place - a place in Scotland. I don’t have a particular connection with Scotland but whenever I visit it feels special, it resonates with me. I have some Celtic ancestry - maybe it’s that connection.
I imagined a Scottish landscape - probably an island - ancient, elemental, weathered, peaceful, timeless.
It wouldn’t be a place to live but it would be a wonderful place to visit. You’d always come back feeling clearer, refreshed, re energised, excited about the world and life.
From that pleasing daydream skip to 4th January 2016. Going to work - commuter crush on the London Underground - people streaming through the ticket barrier at London Bridge Station into the cold and the pouring rain. First day back to work after Christmas and New Year.
And there it was.
As I put my card on the ticket barrier I thought ‘I’m still thinking of a name.’ There was a split second of disappointment that I still hadn’t come up with anything but then a flash and ‘Hang on a minute - still thinking of a name - s t o a n - that sounds like a place in Scotland!’
As soon as I got to my desk I searched, found nothing and registered Stoan Method.
Voila! Stoan Method came into existence.
The family name Stoan
It’s possible to research anything and I find that Stoan is the 3,957,383rd most common surname in the world. Not very common then! It’s most prevalent in the USA but the highest density of people with the family name Stoan is in Botswana.

What’s the difference between Stoan Method and coaching?
The main differences are that STOAN Method is cheaper per session, faster to get a result because it’s just 4 sessions plus 1 after six months. And it’s personally empowering because you learn the thinking techniques. Once you know them you can use them again and again.
Coaching relies more on the relationship that develops between you and your coach and it typically follows an agenda set by the client. That’s why coaching is open ended and takes more sessions than you commit to when choosing Stoan Method. With Stoan Method the sessions and your work before and during them sets the agenda.
In terms of effectiveness I believe Stoan Method can get you to personal insight, clear thinking, direction setting and decision making faster than coaching.
People go to coaches to achieve other outcomes. Sometimes, after doing Stoan Method, clients decide they’d benefit from ongoing help from someone like a coach, therapist or counsellor.
Being clear about what help you need is a good place of clarity to arrive at. Stoan Method gets you there quickly.
